Research |
|
|
LOAM is currently collecting information
on the research being carried out in Sri Lanka and hence
this page is in its formative stage. We will however,
attempt to give you a brief outline on the organizations
engaged in research. |
|
|
In the past few years, many organizations
and individuals have begun to conduct research on the
different facets of organic agriculture in Sri Lanka. |
|
|
While the Universities of Peradeniya,
Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa are engaged in research they have
also initiated academic courses in organic agriculture.
The University of Peradeniya has initiated a course on
the Post Graduate Level. |
|
|
The Ministry of Agriculture is also
greatly involved in conducting research on organic
agriculture, specifically in the cultivation of paddy
and export crops. We are aware of the interest of the
Export Agriculture Department in developing the organic
sector. In fact, the Government has also allocated funds
to organic agriculture of which a fair component is
spent on research. |
|
|
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and
the Council for Agricultural Research are also pursuing
diverse facets of organic agriculture. In fact a special
committee has been set up in the NSF to research into
and validate the case for organic agriculture. |
|
|
Several non governmental organizations
are also engaged in research but the research conducted
by organizations like Future In Our Hands, Gami Seva
Sevena, BRIT and Isura Sanwardena Kendraya are
participatory and engage the farmer. |
|
|
Other non governmental organizations like
the Neo Synthesis Research Centre also carry out
scientific research but the methodology is ‘applied’
where both the research and field activities to validate
the hypothesis are carried out at the same time. |
